Mt. Lebanon Internship Opportunity (Part-time)

Name of Project: "Summer in the City" Promotional Events

Description of project: For the past three years, Mt. Lebanon has been working to build a series of summer street events designed to bring visitors to the central business district. Three years ago, we began with First Fridays, a five month series of street festivals that feature multiple venues for live music and strolling performance art. These events are now known as National City presents First Fridays in recognition of the primary sponsor.

In 2006, we initiated a weekly "Sidewalk Saturdays" series, featuring a farmers' market and weekly concert series sponsored by Alberta Modern Hair, a local salon.

In 2007, we're planning to continue both First Fridays and Sidewalk Saturdays. In addition, we will be working with a group of young professionals (L.E.B.O.) interested in organizing several small and one large event designed to attract young people from the Pittsburgh region.

The intern's project is to work with the Commercial Districts office, the Business and Professional Association, L.E.B.O. and others to implement a coordinated marketing plan for all of our summer events, a calendar for and writing of copy and for print and electronic notices, and to develop and produce event flyers and programs for public distribution. The intern will also assist with preparation for and running of events.

Outcomes for Mt. Lebanon and for the intern (what will they learn):

The intern will experience working with independent owners of small businesses; he/she will research opportunities for unpaid advertising and implement and expand on a plan to derive maximum benefit from them; he/she will become familiar with promotional events designed to promote a core business community to existing and potential customers;
The municipality will continue to improve the quality of the events it offers to the public in its central business district; and it will draw an even greater number of visitors to these events from neighboring communities and from the entire Pittsburgh region.

How project success will be evaluated: The project measures will be numbers of listings each event receives in published community calendars, and estimated attendance numbers at each event.

Who will supervise the intern? The intern will be supervised by the commercial districts manager

Qualifications: The student will be preferably a graduate student in marketing and communications and/or urban studies, with an interest in Main Street revitalization, special event planning, and/or arts festivals.

Compensation: The internship includes a small stipend of approximately $2600. Hours are flexible.

YOUNG MT. LEBANON
A new group for young people is forming in Mt. Lebanon -- right under our typically Pittsburgh older noses. Lifestyle Enriched by Opportunity, with the acronym LEBO, is still in the beginning stages, but is repidly gaining momentum as more young professionals are learning about it.

Mame Bradley, commercial districts manager for Mt. Lebanon, came up with the concept. The main goal, says Bradley, is to bring younger professionals here.

Bradley interviewed a few young professionals to find out what they like to do in their spare time, where they go with their friends and, most important, why they don't seem to be coming to Mt. Lebanon. "The reasons people gave were varied," says Bradley. "Most of them said things like 'There really aren't enough places that are attractive.' Others said it just didn't occur to younger people to hang out here."

Jaime Lebo, Mt. Lebanon Class of 1999 and a founding member of the group, wants to let people know that Mt. Lebanon isn't just for families. "Mt. Lebanon has so much to offer -- unique boutiques, great restaurants, a fantastic school district, and it's a safe neighborhood," says Lebo. "I think one of our main goals is to make Mt. Lebanon a destination."

Members of LEBO have been using all available technology to get the word out about their organization. They have a Web presense on Facebook that is available to anyone with a valid university e-mail address. Simply log onto www.facebook.com and do a group search for "Young Mt. Lebo."

For those who aren't in college, a page has been formed on MySpace, too. For this page, just type into the address bar groups.myspace.com/youngmtlebo. They have also formed a blog, youngmtlebo.blogspot.com, to keep interested individuals informed for free.

The group tries to meet at least once a month, typically at a Washington Road watering hole. "As we are still pretty new, we are solidifying our specific goals and how we want to go about achieving them," says Lebo. To date, more than 300 members have joined the online groups and group activities are beginning to take shape.

Anne Babish, Mt. Lebanon Class of 2001 and another co-founder, says a long-term goal of the group is to inspire Mt. Lebanon property owners to renovate some of the older apartments and single-family dwellings, making Mt. Lebanon more attractive, more accessible, more affordable and definitely more youthful, trendy and hip. "If it happens, it's going to put Mt. Lebanon back on the map," she says. "It's not like we're not there already, but we're just under the radar."

Meeting

Hi everyone! Here's an update for you: A few of us met with a committee at the municipal building who is responsible for supporting events in Mt. Lebanon, physically and financially, and we've been given the "go ahead" to get planning and strategizing.

And that's where all of you come in!!!

We've heard from so many of you... and we know a lot of you are out-of-town... but we have yet to see you Pittsburghers at our meetings!!

If you have time, please stop by this Tuesday, at the private room at Molly Brannigan's at 6:30PM, at least, because we're going to be planning an event to take place over Winter Break! We need all the suggestions you can give us. If you can't come, but at some point you'd be willing to volunteer in any way... let us know!

We've had people email us that they'd be willing to be our group photographer, our graphic specialist, a party host for smaller LEBO events, etc... If you think you can contribute... speak up, please... we'd appreciate it!

You know who we are, you have an idea what we want to do, now we need your help! We need people to help with planning, we need people to host smaller events once a month around Mt. Lebanon, we need peole who are willing to help drum up financial support and sponsorships from the places they work, etc... We need a commitment from you, not just a "drop by whenever you feel like it." We are really trying to solidify our mission, goals, planning.

Saloon Event

Ok... so you're coming home for Thanksgiving. We know you're looking for something to do and we know you'd like to avoid all of the oh-so-uncomfortable reunions, but you just can't help it. You HAVE to see people and you WANT them to see you. That's why WE (your new friend, LEBO, to hang out with when you're home) know you're going to be at the Saloon at like 10ish on Wednesday, November 22. So our plan isn't to interrupt your drinking, your time to gossip OR attempts to make your ex totally jealous. Look for our table, the cute girls surrounded by balloons and their fish bowl. Drop us your card, if you have one, so we can keep in touch AND, please, take one of our cards (Yeah... we have 'em. We're kind of a big deal!), so after you stumble out of the Saloon you'll have something to remember us by. Take a few, because we know you haven't done such a great job passing the word along! Honestly if we're going to do this for Mt. Lebanon... we need you, your help and your friends. See you Wednesday!

Mt. Lebanon Grad to Star in Indie Film

Lebo native/grad who currently lives in Brooklyn is starring in what promises to be an amazing new independent film, Old Joy.

Dan London is starring alongside the ever-talented musician/actor Will Oldham.

ARE YOU OUT THERE??? Calling all young professionals in Mt. Lebanon to show their faces.

We are dedicated to making Lebo a hip place and creating an atmosphere for people like YOU to meet, hang out, and network. We are trying to get everyone back to LEBO this summer for a big street festival (at least one, possibly a few)!

We need you to HELP US! Come to the meetings (they are listed on here) ESPECIALLY the night before Thanksgiving at The Saloon. We'll have more information about the "Summer Event" that night. Obviously we need to gain as much of a following as possible, so please SPREAD THE WORD.

RIght now, we're in the preliminary stages. We're developing a name for the committee that is putting this "Summer Event" together. We are trying to find a creative and hip name for the "Summer Event." We need logos, possibly a website, advertisements, and anything else possible right now. If you can help, message us.
